Even if framing or focus\u00a0are less than perfect, with an editor you know the scene\u00a0will cut together.\u00a0Often a\u00a0camera person without editing experience wastes\u00a0time on lighting,\u00a0focus or perfect framing, completely missing the shot or\u00a0emotion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Multi-cam shoot<br \/>\n-Coordinate the rolls\u00a0of all camera&#8217;s and audio recorders!<br \/>\n<\/strong>Everybody starts &amp; stops at the same time.\u00a0This greatly reduces the time you have to spend in post trying to figure out what belongs to what.<br \/>\nBob the editor:\u00a0<em>\u201dPlease no starting and stopping at will, you\u2019ll create hundreds of files per shoot that I have to\u00a0find and organize in post\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>-Use a good\u00a0common audio source on all camera&#8217;s\u00a0&amp;\u00a0recorders.<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Use the best mic possible to facilitate automated waveform syncing and make sure those mics &#8220;hear&#8221; the same source.<br \/>\n<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">-Use Time-of-day FREE RUN on all sources.<br \/>\n<\/strong>With time-of-day, anyone on set can look at their watch and make a performance note or any other comment that will be useful and time saving later in the edit room. Make sure every device is set to Free Run.<br \/>\n<strong>-Shoot with an I-frame codec. &gt;No H264 DSLR\u00a0<\/strong><b>compression!<\/b><br \/>\nDVCPRO-HD, PRORES,\u00a0DNxHD or MXF using external recorders to\u00a0skip transcoding all together.<br \/>\nThis is a necessity\u00a0on shoots with more than 3 cameras because <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dvxuser.com\/V6\/showthread.php?292962-codec-question-All-I-vs-Long-GOP\" target=\"_blank\">Premiere\u00a0can&#8217;t\u00a0decompress long-GOP-codecs<\/a>\u00a0without time consuming crashes and other issues.<br \/>\nDownload <a href=\"https:\/\/eww.pass.panasonic.co.jp\/pro-av\/support\/content\/download\/EN\/ep2main\/p2view_plus_e.htm#tabs-2\" target=\"_blank\">P2 &amp; AVCHD viewer ,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pro.sony.com\/bbsc\/ssr\/micro-xdcam\/resource.downloads.bbsccms-assets-micro-xdcam-downloads-XDZP1TC.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Sony clip browser<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.red.com\/downloads?category=Software&amp;release=final\" target=\"_blank\">RED<\/a> to screen native files on computers without Premiere.<br \/>\n<strong>-Use the strongest shooter for the b-roll.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Albert Maysles:\u00a0\u201dGetting b-roll in a verite situation is tricky, you have to be quick to grab the right shots to make a scene editable\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>-All cameras: Use fixed White balance, not automatic, not preset.<\/strong><br \/>\n-Spend one minute getting a good balance, using a white card,\u00a0all cameras,\u00a0in the room where you do your shots.<br \/>\n<strong>-Use the same brand and type<\/strong> (no mixing of DSLR and video cameras)<br \/>\n<strong>-Use the same frame size and frame rate.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>-If possible jam sync the timecode to time of day for easy logging.<br \/>\n-When shooting double system: LOG AUDIO FILES!!!! \u00a0<\/strong>If it&#8217;s got no picture, tell the editor\u00a0what it matches to &#8211; the editor\u00a0wasn&#8217;t there when you shot it, and can only tell what it is, by playing it in real time unless there\u00a0is a log.<strong><br \/>\n-Make sure that the reel names and timecode<\/strong> on your camera are set correctly and that they increment with each new card, tape or disc. The more information you can supply the better. If you&#8217;re keeping logging sheets or camera reports, please know editors\u00a0do actually look at them!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Single cam shoot<br \/>\n<\/strong>Ideal camera person<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>has at least\u00a02 of these qualities:<br \/>\n-has edited professionally for more than 1 year.<br \/>\n-has multiple, recent video\u2019s online that you like.<br \/>\n-owns or has access to the camera that you want to use on the shoot.<br \/>\n-pays attention to detail &amp; is easy to work with.<br \/>\n-has a &#8220;good eye&#8221;<br \/>\nA good camera operator will be able to spot a good opportunity and have an artistic eye for framing shots.<br \/>\nAfter finding\u00a0\u00a0a reel of someone you like, also\u00a0ask for a private link to 10 min of raw footage, uncut. Notice how he holds shots and gives multiple options for things that happen in front of the lens.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Specifications for an interview:<\/strong><br \/>\n-make sure that the interviewee is evenly lit and that there are no distracting bright spots in the BG.<br \/>\n-exposure should be checked with zebra or peaking.<br \/>\n-no distracting movement in the BG.<br \/>\n-when shooting an interview longer than 10 min; make sure the light balance\/color balance doesn\u2019t change over time. (don\u2019t shoot long interviews with available light on a cloudy day)<br \/>\n-Use the largest monitor you can carry to check focus.<br \/>\n-The DOF (dept of field) should be large enough to allow the interviewee to move their head and still keep eyes and ears in focus.<br \/>\n-Pay special attention to reflection of crew and lights when people wear glasses.\u00a0Move lights up or tip glasses down, to avoid.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nSpecifications for B-roll:<\/strong><br \/>\n-no adjustments of focus or exposure\u00a0during a shot.<br \/>\n-if you have to reframe or refocus, please\u00a0<strong>hold the shot at least 10 sec<\/strong>.<br \/>\n&#8211;<strong>Always make a move both ways<\/strong>\u00a0(tilt up, wait 10sec tilt back down)<br \/>\n&#8211;<strong>Roll static shots at least 30sec<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<em>Bob: \u201cI think that shooters spend so much time behind the camera that it FEELS like they\u2019ve sat on a shot long enough, when they\u2019ve really only scored about two seconds of usable footage\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PBXAQRhkP9U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150419142053\/http:\/www.mediacollege.com\/video\/camera\/focus\/back-focus.html\"><strong>Check the back-focus<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0on a large monitor before the shoot, learn how to adjust it for the specific camera you use:<br \/>\nPanasonic HVX-200 = Fixed lens &gt; no back-focus adjust.<br \/>\nPanasonic AG-HPX370\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150419142053\/http:\/forums.newtek.com\/showthread.php?128947-Panasonic-370-Camera\">always have the iris between 2.8 and 5,6<\/a>\u00a0(use the ND filter &amp; shutter to compensate)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150419142053\/http:\/www.cambridgeincolour.com\/tutorials\/diffraction-photography.htm\">Higher aperture makes the shot soft, this is a known issue.<\/a><br \/>\nSONY EX3 &gt; Set camera up with focus chart, go to the \u201cLens\u201d menu in the main menu when your camera is in camera mode.<br \/>\nSelect \u201cAuto FB Adjust\u201d and the camera should begin automatically calibrating itself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AUDIO<\/strong><br \/>\n-Monitor audio using headphones during the shoot.<br \/>\n-Microphone placement is everything. The one spot that sounds best may also create mouth noises that a windscreen can\u2019t cure. Putting the microphone farther down the chest can cause severe rumble from the chest cavity and stomach, and let too much room noise into the balance of direct- to-room sound.<br \/>\n-Center the microphone on your talent as much as possible.<br \/>\n-Do not hide the microphone under clothes, it will create muffled sound and rustling noises.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>11 things video editors wish they could say to camera operators and DOPs I much rather shoot with an operating-editor, than a camera person with little or no editing experience.
