37 Seconds at TFF2019

Today I saw what I think is the best feature film of 2019 so far: 37 Seconds.
The debut of Japanese director Hikari.
About a 23 year old manga artist with cerebral palsy who wants to spread her wings and live independent from her over-protective mom and a job where she is the invisible artist creating work for another manga artist.
Played by disabled first-time actress Mei Kayama.
The film won the Panorama Audience Award this year in Berlin.
Click here to for Netflix release date in U.S.
It’s the second Netflix show I saw this year featuring an actor with cerebral palsy.

I edited this interview a few weeks ago with Ryan O’Connell the creator of Special on Netflix.

Hip comedy Safe Spaces With Justin Long, & Fran Drescher. About a New York city professor dealing with a school controversy while his grandma is dying, forcing him to reconnect with his dad Westwing’s Richard Schiff. See a clip here
Directed and very well edited by Daniel Schechter

Feature debut by Bora Kim > House of Hummingbird. A great and at times depressing look at life in Seoul in 1994. From the perspective of an eight grader.

Must See short of the day: Framing Agnes by Kristen Schilt an Chase Joynt who also stars. An unexpected look into found archives from the 50’s with histories of transgender people. Told in an original way that blends the 50’s stories with the actor’s stories.
