I saw the best documentary of the festival today.

The winner of this year’s best editing award for Executive Producer / Writer and Editor Jennifer Tiexiera.
It is an almost perfect documentary where it seems like the filmmakers are completely invisible and all that matters is the story of peoples lives. I think this will win director Davy Rothbart another Emmy. He won his first in 2014 for Medora.
The second credit that rolls is “In collaboration with the Sanford family” Because a lot of the footage is shot by the family themselves! The editing and use of voice over by the family members, reflecting on their lives, is what makes this really unusual. Filmmakers staying out of the way of what unfolds, creating one of the purest documentaries I’ve ever seen. See review.
